We’ve been keeping ourselves busy with this gorgeous sunny weather we’ve been having here. From cutting in the driveway to where the new cabin will go and picking our building spot, to building a greenhouse and prepping the garden space. We’ve even been having hotdogs and smores over the fire as we slowly burn our slash pile in our new fire pit!
Our biggest update has really been the greenhouse though. We had a few windows (that we got for free!) sitting around that weren’t saved for any specific project, so we threw together a greenhouse with them.
First we started with harvesting some smaller trees as lumber for this project (don’t worry, I’m also busy replacing every tree we harvest!). This created an adorable log cabin-esque base.
We then added supports for the roof and placed the windows. This part was a bit tricky, and we ended up cracking a window, unfortunately.
Then we used purchased 2×4’s and clear roofing for up top. I got sawdust’d during this part 😆
Once it was all built, we added raised beds to the inside. Bellamy had a grand time digging holes and filling in dirt during this part.
Because we haul water here I based the raised beds off of hugelkultur beds. First adding whole logs, then straw and partially decomposed logs and wood chips before adding mostly finished compost and dirt. The end result is a rather adorable greenhouse.
And the plants look pretty happy about it too! I still have a few things left to plant, but the temperature is holding steady inside. Luckily, a few of the widows actually open for air flow if we get another heat wave this summer.
Oh, and as for the painted window, the girls and I finger painted that on Mother’s Day. It hides the crack in the window quite nicely I think!
We’ve also tilled the ground around the greenhouse for a garden. That will go in as soon as we finish fencing the area. I’m interested in feeding my family, not moose! This will be the first year we have been able to go all out on the garden here. I hope all my trial and error will finally pay off!
