A little about us:

Hi, I’m Katie. I started this blog when Kyle and I first moved to Alaska in spring of 2016, mostly as a sort of journal for my family and friends to follow along on our off grid and off road adventures. We purchased raw land off the road, rented out our house, and gave notice at our jobs. Then we found out I’d be too pregnant to get on a plane when we planned to leave. So we bumped up our timeline and made it to Alaska when I was 5 months with our oldest, Bellamy.

We’ve lived every kind of way out here in the years since we moved. From sleeping on the ground next to a fire (yes, while pregnant!), to a tent, to a tiny 250 sq ft dry cabin with an outdoor shower and wood stove cooking, to finally purchasing a mini fridge and propane oven in a comfortable 550ish sq ft space. And that’s when our youngest, Inara, came along. We’ve gardened and had chickens, rabbits, goats and pigs. And we’ve heated with wood, hauled our own water, and run off of solar or a generator for power this entire time.

And then….

In 2022 we packed up to move the homestead further off the road, because the road started coming to us! We’re not completely starting over, as the new homestead has a 3 story A-frame cabin built in the 1930’s that we are rehabbing to live in full time. The new homestead is right on the beach, with gorgeous views of the Cook Inlet and Fire Island. Once the cabin is finished, and solar and wind are set up (done!), we’ll start prepping for high tunnels and animals again. Ducks and rabbits are on the shortlist, though someday I’d like to add a cow. I’d be happy with yaks too.

I love that this blog and our social media pages have slowly grown to include new neighbors and new friends across the world. It has given me the opportunity to talk to people from all walks of life. To get and give advice, to exchange homemade gifts, seeds, and mineral concretions. And it’s provided a means of supporting my family through content creation and sharing our story.
