Usually when I make the yearly Goals post, I’m looking back at what we accomplished from last year and what needs to be moved to the new year. Last year we were hoping to build a garage, but the new homestead has one. So many of the goals don’t transfer, so it’s time to start from scratch!

The Biggest Of Our Goals

Fix up the cabin and get moved in! We were hoping to be moved in by now, but closing took several months longer than it should have thanks to a sale boom here. Without heat in the new place, we can’t bring the girls while we work on it in winter. And off grid baby-sitters aren’t exactly a thing, so they go everywhere and do everything with us. That means waiting for the weather to warm up a bit before continuing construction.

Water

At the very least, we’ll be setting up another rain water catchment (Amazon) system at the new cabin. I have some ideas about how to continue using it in winter too! And there is an old well on the property. I’m hopeful that we can get it going again by just flushing and priming it.

Garden and Greenhouse

We haven’t been able to afford a high tunnel to extend our growing season yet. But it looks like we’ll be able to this year! Having that should add a month or two on either side of our 90ish day growing season. I’m so excited to have a big garden again!

Animals

I’m hoping to get ducks and rabbits for meat and eggs this year. That all depends on getting the high tunnel, though. I have plans to test a sort of rotational grazing, colony type set up for them. If the high tunnel doesn’t get put up until summer, then I’ll wait on ducks but still potentially get rabbits. I’d love to add bees to the list this year as well, but I think that’ll have to wait until next year!
